Tuesday August 14th, 2001: Film

Went to see Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within, my verdict?

If you enjoy the games then you'll also enjoy the film, you'll immediately recognise the style, characters & storyline. Here lies the problem though, although it is a great Final Fantasy story (one which, no doubt, would have made an excellent game) it is one such story fitted into less than 2 hours.

Consider that it takes 50 to 70 hours to fully explore FF games and you won't be surprised that there are more than a few holes in the films storyline (A few examples: even at the start of the film, 5 of the spirits have been collected, very little of the characters origins are explored, and the sub-plot of the other planet is only barely touched).

Watching the film feels like being dropped straight onto the fourth disc, without any knowledge of what happened on the previous three. But, oh what a fourth disc!

- Pat Bateman, American Psycho (Bret Easton Ellis)
