Durera's Xbox - 12/20/2007

I was about to feel sorry for myself, until Durera showed up and made my day with a little gaming! Our gamerscore stands at 30,708 and counting! He rocked out to Rockstar Table Tennis, and... hmmm... maybe that was all... it felt like we played more games.

A Return to PuG

Last Updated: Saturday September 1st, 2007 12:55 PM

A rare week; I actully put in a good few hours in the City of Heroes!

In the late hours of Friday night, with none of my friends about, I decided I'd have a stab at forming a pick up group; but these would be no ordinary missions -- we'd be facing those cursed Malta Operatives with their Sappers, so team work would be essential -- not a staple diet of your ordinary pick up group!

Firstly, I'm very much used to leading teams as a Blaster, but I found that playing as a Tanker makes it so much easier to lead -- you can lead from the front and if the team is a little slow in following there's a good chance you actually survive when catch up :)

During the life of the team members came and went; Mai Sakaki, Locus Brio, Nihs Nek, Oh Yea, Hunny Bunny, Sparkd, Pr0xy, Gehasste Seele & DarkRestoration; but all throughout there was a surprising level of teamwork on display, unlike earlier in the day when I teamed with a certain Scrapper who appeared to be oblivious to the fact he was even on a team; much debvt ensured!

Durera's Xbox - 8/31/2007

You would think I had died and gone to heaven when Durera showed up to play. Gamer score stands at 24,833. He rocked out to Bomberman LIVE, and after that, called it a day.

Server Performance Issues

I've resolved the server performance issues the site has been having of late. Everything is back to it's normal speed again. Unfortunately, as part of City information Terminal's redesign, their RSS news feeds are no longer available, and the pages on my site that referenced them were waiting 1 minute before failing, causing a backlog of processes on the sever that crippled the site.

Durera's Xbox - 7/29/2007

Durera seemed really excited to play yesterday. Our current gamerscore is 24,146 . That is an increase of 50 points over last time! He played Kameo adding 1 achievement, Forza Motorsport 2, and did it while drooling over my awesome graphics and sound.

I threw this together to help me keep track of the cars I've bought and what I still need to get. I find it very helpful when browsing the Auction house at work planning what I'll be bidding on when I get home:)

It's still very much a work in progress, but I figured I'd make it available incase anyone else might like to use it.

If you'd like to take a look at it you will need to register an account on the site first so you can build your own garage; there is no way to view other peoples' data at the moment.

Durera's Xbox - 7/21/2007

Like a king on his throne, Durera said 'awaken' and for I did comply. 23,346 points represents the size of our growing kingdom. Ok, enough of this Monarchy stuff. He rocked out to Pro Evolution Soccer 6, Forza Motorsport 2, and then I basked in the warm glow of post gaming. Mmmm warm...

Durera's Weekly Recap - 6/18/2007

It is hard to believe another week has passed. Here is the recap: It isn't going to be much of a surprise if you have been reading the blog. There has been no gaming... none... zilch... nothing... If you want to see a sad Xbox... just stare into my eye and witness the sorrow.

Consoles are for playing! I am glad Durera picked up on that yesterday... Gamerscore is a respectful 19373 points. That is a boost of 450 points over last time! We have now entered the 19,000 GS club! He played Top Spin 2 gaining 2 achievements, and... hmmm... maybe that was all... it felt like we played more games.

Lost Planet Target Mark Guides Completed

Tuesday April 3rd, 2007: Lost Planet (Gaming)
Last Updated: Tuesday April 3rd, 2007 03:21 PM

I completed the Lost Planet target mark guides this morning, adding in the marks for Hard mode. At the same time I decided to completely overhaul the design of the guides with using some Javascript I found at A List Apart.

As for my personal progress towards Master Pioneer; I've obtained all Target marks on Easy and Normal difficulties, I have all the Target markers on Extreme up to level 10, excluding a couple of markers on level 7 & 9. I think I'll probably take a break from the game before playing Hard, otherwise I'll probably just cruise through it on autopilot having done each level at least three time in the past month and a half.

Durera's Xbox - 4/3/2007

I thought maybe the power was out yesterday... imagine my surprise when Durera hit the switches! Gamerscore stands at 18683. He made some progress on Top Spin 2, Pro Evolution Soccer 6, and then Durera went to get some food. I told him to bring me back something but I got seriously dissed.

Downgrading my PSP

Monday April 2nd, 2007: PSP (Gaming)
Last Updated: Monday April 2nd, 2007 03:43 PM

I've decided that it's time to try and get some use out of my PSP; I don't think it's seen the light of day in over a year now! Apparently with the right firmware I can play my old PS1 games on it. I found a good guide at PSP-Hacks.com. It was a pretty painless experience truth be told -- even though I don't use the thing I still didn't fancy turning it into a £100 paper weight! The worst part of the downgrade is when the PSP shuts down and the downdate is being applied. Thankfully everything ran smoothly and the whole process took less than 5 minutes. You can download the Easy Downgrader for version 3.5/2.6 PSP's from PSP-Hacks -- it's a great app that takes you step by step through the entire process.

First on my to-do list was to get some emulators up and running, courtesy of Easy Emu Nstaller v0.1.2. MAME4ALLPSP was pretty poor and I removed it after trying out a number of ROMs; An Amiga Emulator (PSPUAE) proved similarly weak; but the Megadrive emulator (DGEN For PSP) worked a treat. After a quick blast on Streets of Rage I decided to look a little deeper into what was going on in the scene; the first thing that grabbed me was DevHook:

"Device Hook (or DevHook for short) is a Homebrew App for PSPs running the 1.5 Firmware. DevHook is used to play your backed-up Game ISOs from your memory stick, or your UMDs. It can run every game up to date. DevHook also emulates the latest firmwares, including 3.03, giving you the ability to use the newest firmware perks! Web Browser, RSS Feed, LocationFree Player, Windows Media Audio (WMA) File support, Flash Player! All are functional! There is no risk in bricking your PSP either, as everything runs off your memory card!"

A more recent development which seems to have made most of what I read about redundant is that of custom firmware, tomorrow I think I will have a go at installing Dark_aleX's 3.10 OE firmware:

"Custom firmware is also a new development. These require firmware 1.5 to install, as to do so involves writing to the PSP's flash memory, and 1.5 is the safest firmware to do so from. Not to be confused with official Sony firmwares, custom firmwares allow us to have some of the best features that Sony would never allow. Custom Firmware allows you to have recovery mode, so the PSP can be brought back in the event that it is ever bricked."

I found a great introduction/overview to the entire PSP homebrew PSP setup in The Big PSP Guide, on PSP-Hacks forums.

Durera's Weekly Recap - 4/2/2007

Someone ask for a weekly recap? Even if you didn't, here it is: If Durera plays 4 days every week, I will be one happy Xbox. It was productive... Gamerscore went up 75 points so I am happy. Yay for 3 achievements! w00t! Oh, and from what I remember, Durera's favorite game last week was Pro Evolution Soccer 6. He played it on 3 of the days.

So there you have it... Check back next week for another report from your's truly.

Wii-njury

After playing with my new Wii for a couple of hours in the evening my shoulder is absolutely killing me, guess I'm just not used to waving my arms around like that. Wii Sports was fun (even if my Wii fitness age is a shocking 89 at the moment); Wii Play had a few good games in the bunch, but doesn't look as good as the Sports package; and there's not a great deal I can say about Zelda as I only got to play it for a couple of minutes.

I'll reserve judgement on the Wii's graphics until I get my hands on a component cable and plug it into my TV as it does look pretty poor through composite on the TV at Hayley's; but I wouldn't expect anything else to be honest.

Durera's Xbox - 3/29/2007

I told Durera 'Don't make me hurt you!' and the threat worked because he decided to show up yesterday. A gamer score of 18643 is in our back pocket. He rocked out to Pro Evolution Soccer 6, and after that, called it a day.

If, like me, you've taken to the challenge of obtaining the Master Pioneer achievement in Lost Planet then you may find my guide, combining two of best guides previously available ,very helpful. At present it covers Easy, Normal and Extreme modes, I haven't got around to doing one for Hard mode yet.

Durera's Xbox - 3/27/2007

Durera needed a friend like me yesterday... I could see it in his eyes. I am there for you brother. Remember that. Gamer score is 18643. That is an increase of 35 points over last time! He rocked out to Top Spin 2, Crackdown finishing 2 achievements, and then he almost hugged me, but I was like back off dude.

How Championship Manager shaped my life

Tuesday March 16th, 2004: Football Manager (Gaming)
Last Updated: Tuesday June 19th, 2007 04:43 PM

Commodore Amiga 600

I've been playing Championship Manager, in one form or another, for over a decade now. I bought my first copy of CM back in 1993, Championship Manager '93 for my Commodore Amiga 600. Each and every season I went down to Computer World to spend £9.99 on the latest data update and took it home to create a brand new version of CM.

My A-Level programming coursework was a football management game written in Pascal. I named it Relegation Manager, although the simplicity of the game more closely resembled that of Premier Manager, it was definitely inspired by good ol' CM. Relegation Manager scored over 80% for my programming module ... more than CM '93 achieved in most magazine reviews!!

Had I not spent all my time playing CM I wonder what kind of grades I could have achieved at school? Needless to say I got 'enough'. In the Summer of '96 I got 5 Bs, 4 Cs, and an A (that being pretty much the requirement for continuing on into sixth form) despite spending my 'revision time' plotting Wycombe Wanderers rise through the football league. In '98 I was busy completing season twenty-something of my longest running Championship Manager career when some people might say that I'd have been better off putting my energy into revising for my A-Levels ... again I got what I needed -- nothing more, nothing less; one B (economics), one C (mathematics) and an A (computing)

I had to wait 2 years after the release of CM2 to get my hands on it. Mind you, that two year wait did lead me to complete 26 seasons on CM '93, guiding the mighty Liverpool through over 2 decades of complete dominance, amassing a fortune of over £150 million in the club accounts in the process of doing so.

Championship Manager 93

Although CM2 looked initailly to be due for an Amiga release hopes of that soon died. When I left home for university in 1998 I needed a PC .. for my uni work. So I bought a brand new Packard Bell PC (400Mhz, 28[!] Mb RAM, with 1Gb HD) from PC World with my girlfriend, on that day I also bought a copy of CM2. Cynics among us may say that the only reason I bought a PC was to play CM2, and they'd be right.

My university life rather closely resembled my school life; there were the times I was playing Championship Manager, and there were the time I was wanting to play Championship Manager. I remember many a time sat in Linear Algebra planning my next transfer coup, the one that would surely secure another league title for Liverpool.

Things have changed a great deal since I first got lost in world CM. Back then data updates were released once a year, cost £9.99 and involved mastering a new set of CM game disks from the original game and update disks. Today, if you take into account the unoffical updates, then you will usually not have much trouble finding an update not more than a week old throughout the year, and it's free and doesn't involve formatting three new 3.5" floppy disks.

The most noticable change in CM is the gaming press's opinion of it. Back in 1993 CM '93 received a miserly score of fifty something percent from whatever Amiga magazine I bought at the time. Today, even the incredibly buggy first release of CM4 received rave reviews and incredible scores from a press clearly happy just to sell issues off the back of their CM4 exclusives!

Half a year after the first release of CM4, after releasing 5 major patches, SI seem to have a worthy addition to the Championship Manager series.

The future of Championship Manager is uncertain, Eidos and Sports Interactive are parting company, with Eidos retaining the CM brand, and SI the CM code. CM may live on in the hands of Eidos, but will Championship Manager become the next 'name' Eidos use to generate high sales for crap games? Only time will tell, anyone for a game of Lara Croft Tomb Raider: Angel of Darkness? Thought not!

CM will live on but it won't be Championship Manager as we know it now, but in everyway that counts, it will be Championship Manager.

Payday - and payrise day too! I get an extra £100 odd in my pay packet each month now :)

I've certainly got my money's worth of the PES3 Demo, it cost a mere £1.99 from GAME - redeemable, if I were foolish enough to pay £40 for the game on the high street - yet I have spent endless hours playing the game over and over again. Why? Because it is so damn hard. The best I've mustered so far is a string of 1-0 victories, although the performances have been great lately I still can't manage that crucial second goal.

Two weeks to go! Just two weeks! The release date of Pro Evolution Soccer 3 has been moved forward to match that of EA's latest FIFA outing, this means I get PES3 goodness a whole fortnight earlier - thank you EA, at least some good has come out of FIFA 2004.

Meanwhile, in a reality not too far away I seem to have had a constant stream of packages from Play.com arriving lately - with more to come! GI Joe: The Movie and Defenders of the Earth: The story begins arrived today, with my X-Port due sometime soon and PES3, Star Wars: Galaxies and CM 03/04 due out over the coming weeks and months it's going to be a busy gaming season this Autumn!

Seduction is the art of making normal, desirable, good and rewarding what had previously seemed abnormal, undesirable, evil and unrewarding. Seduction was th art of changing another's audience and hence his personality. I refer, of course, to the classical seduction of the 'innocent' and not the mutual masturbation of promiscuous adults.

I ordered an X-Port for my PS2 too. while I was at Play I noticed that Star Wars: Galaxies now has a release date of October 31 so I pre-ordered it .. looks like I'm going to be busy this Autumn - with a new CM on the way in November too.

To change man, the audience by which he judjes himself must be changed. A man is defined by his audience: by the people, institutions, authors, magazines, movie heroes, philosophers by whom he pictures himself being cheered and booed. Major psychological disturbances, 'identity crises,' are caused when an individual begins to change the audience for whom he plays: from parents to peers; from peers to the works of Albert Camus; from the Bible to Hugh Hefner. The change from I-am-he-who-is-a-good-son to I-am-he-who-is-a-good-budy constitutes a revolution. On the other hand, if the man's buddies approve fidelity one year and infidelity the next, and the man chnages from faithful husband to rake, no revolution has occurred. The class rule remains intact; only the policy of on a minor matter has been altered.

The trouble is that if there is an easy path through a game (and anything in life for that matter) I'll take it. Ikaragua rewards doing it the hard way (learning the enemy attack patterns and making the chains to rack up the big scores. I think the new R-Type might be more my thing...

Despite promising myself that I wouldn;t buy any new games until I finished those I already have I bought Ikaragua in Game today. It does something rarely seen in video games nowadays, takes a simple idea, and gives it a new twist .. the addition of the black/white polarisation and combo chains turn Ikaragua from another pretty shoot-em-up to an essential game (something the GameCube needs a few more of if it's to survive).

Could be a while before I buy any new games at this rate... forget the fact that I bought Onimusha 2 the other weekend -- I had to so that my sister could get the latest Crash Bandicoot game for £15, I was practically forced to buy the game:)

After really finding it hard to persevere through the pre-final-showdown character building random encounters it turned out to be a really good ending, which just about justified the pain I had to go through to get there. Seriously, the last 7 hours of this game have been as enjoyable as having teeth pulled out, but it's all over now.

Took a day off to relax following a very stressful couple of months, put my day to good use completing Resident Evil Zero and reaching the final boss in Final Fantasy X (light at the end of the tunnel -- at last), unfortunately my characters have kind of fast tracked the second part of the game and are not powerful enough to survive the final encounters (missing such elementary skills as Dispel, Reflect, Curaga & protect/Shell) so I have to uninspiriing task of fighting numerous random encounters until I can power them up enough.

Speaking of patches (and bugs), I noticed for the first time today the famous "Morale bug" -- basically every player except those at a human club get stuck on "Very Low" morale, which is kind of a big bug to have not ironed out 3 months after the game was released given that it affect player's in-game performance, the gloss is firmly removed from my CM4 accomplishments up to now.

After successfully combining the statue of a woman with the angel wings (as you do) I hit a save point and switched attention to Final Fantasy X, which I should really have completed by now -- the trouble is that the random encounters are so damn annoying, I don't remember them being this frequent in any of the previous games.

Linda came round, and rather sportingly sat through a few hours of Resi Zero gaming, before getting my attention and heading off to the Cart and Horses for a couple of drinks.

My birthday! But more importantly, also Championship Manager 4 release day! Also the first day of my holiday!

So I woke up at 8am; I didn't own CM4 so I walked into town and corrected that injustice. Amazingly, despite arriving at Game bang on 9am I wasn't the firts person in the store, and had to queue amongst equally obsessive fans to pickup my pre-order. Of seven people in the shop a quick poll indicated that six of those were buying CM4; the other picking up a rather nifty Gameboy Advance SP!

Arriving home at 10:30 I figured I had a good 14 hours of Championship manager in me ... by the time I had the damn thing installed and my leagues initialised it was gone 11. I finished playing CM at 6am Saturday morning! 2 hours later I was back up, loaded Championship Manager and had some breakfast (in that order).

I'm 49% through Gran Turismo 3 now, and I've been playing it a hell of a lot to not even be half way through yet - take note Sierra, a game should take more than a few hours to play through.

The horror of my past two weeks has hit me ... I've spent 90% of my waking life playing Championship Manager. I say this because it is always on, by 10 in the morning 'till 10 in the evening, seven days a week (with a few exceptions), mind you I am doing pretty well now; I've brought Brighton to the brink of the first division, & in another career won Liverpool six trophies in one season alone.

Went shopping, bought The Bouncer & Onimusha for Michael, and nabbed myself Pitch Black for half price. Completed The Bouncer in less than four hours, it's not a very challenging game it's fair to say. Onimusha was more promising, think Resident Evil with Samurai & demons instead of zombies.

Watched Pitch Black, really good film - very Aliens, except you don't know who will survive, and who will meet the business end of some hell creature from space. Thrashed dad at pool (3-1) - now I am the master.

Completed Half-Life: Opposing Force., The ending is in the same vein as the original, which I suppose keeps things consistent, but it's a bit of an anti-climax to be honest.

Henman is playing Ivanisavic today, am I the only Brit who wants Henman to lose, come on - he has no personality. I hope Ivanisavic wins the tournament too - he has character, something ol' Tim never will have. Go Goran, Go!

Housemates planning on a big weekend by the sounds of it, but I can't be bothered with the shake-and-fake of it all.

Completed Half-Life, at last. It's definitely one of the longest games I've played (excluding the Final Fantasy series of course), I like the ending, it's very cool, but not all that satisfying, I won't say too much here 'cos I don't want to ruin it for anyone who's playing the game through now.

Started Half-Life: Opposing Force, apparently it's not as long, but from what I've played of it so far it's just as engrossing as the original. I'll have to get Half-Life: Blue Shift when I complete this one, got to beat the trilogy.

Went to the Hursley Network Gaming Event; knocked out in the first round of the Unreal Tournament tournament, but won a few of the single matches. Dropped round Paul's house on the way back (and a very nice house it is too), met Shelly & had a few beers with Paul before heading back home.

I'm getting quite far into Half-Life now; surely I must be near to completing it now.

Had my interview & presentation for post graduate recruitment at IBM today - I don't think it went too bad. Done little else except try to prepare for these all day.

I've been playing Championship Manager a lot again, just started the second season, after finishing second in the league and winning 2 cups - nice.

Don't steal. The government hates competition.

Did not a lot (again), bought Crazy Taxi for my PS2 though, my opinion: A great game to fill half an hour, but not one to book a week off work to complete (a la FFVIII)
