PSV 0 - 3 Liverpool

Tuesday April 3rd, 2007: Liverpool (Football)
Last Updated: Wednesday April 4th, 2007 09:14 AM

Another mightily impressive performance to follow the Arsenal game; PSV contributed to their own downfall by starting the game with such a negative attitude; they never looked like they were trying to win the game, and once we'd scored the first goal their "hold out for a draw and try to sneak a goal" approach was doomed.

Peter Crouch scored another great headed goal, perhaps he's been working on his technique during the international break? If this isn't just a flash in the pan he may just yet become the 20-goal-a-season striker we've been missing since Owen jumped ship back in 2004!

Liverpool 4 - 1 Arsenal

Liverpool produced one of our most impressive performances of the season today; thrashing Arsenal 4-1; and to be fair it could have been even more!

Peter Crouch played a blinder and well deserved his hattrick, scoring his second with a thunderous header -- the kind of header it looked like he was simply incapable of producing before today. But for me one of the biggest plus' of the game was the performance of our wide players; Gonzales, Pennant, Aurelio -- all of whom played very well and looked comfortable in the red shirt, something that hasn't been entirely true for most of this season.

Durera's Xbox - 3/31/2007

The up-side to England going out of Euro 2004 early is that, finally, Steven Gerrard is able to clear up his club future, which is exactly what he's done today -- by pledging his future to Liverpool F.C.

The past few weeks have been unbearable, having to hear Lampard going on about how great it'd be if Gerrard signed for Chelsea, disobeying rules not to talk about club matters. Even worse than that is all the Liverpool 'fans' flooding the forums/phone in's etc. with 'Gerrard's a traitor' and 'my mate Kev says Gerrard's already signed'

I can accept all this bullshit from the tabloids - it's their job to sell 'papers - but I'll never understand the mindset of a fan that seriously thinks Gerrard would leave the club he loves at this moment in time, when (once again) things look like they could be turning around.

"I spoke to him three weeks ago and it was clear he was not happy. He was down and wants success" - Not the words I like to hear coming from Rick Parry when he's talking about the best midfielder in Europe. For all Houllier's claims that he has left this club with a footballing legacy that will come good, I see a squad of talented players dissillusioned at a club heading nowhere, none more so than Michael Owen and Steven Gerrard. Hopefully these players will give Benitez a chance to prove that he can undo the damage that Houllier has done to the club in the past few seasons.

England outplayed France for 90 minutes and took a deserved lead through Frank Lampard, but just when I thought my days of cursing Emile Heskey were over he conceeded a stupid foul which lead to Zidane slotting a free-kick past a flat footed David James in injury time. As if that wasn't enough Gerrard messed up a back pass in the ensueing chaos and David James assaulted Thieery Henry when the forward was goning nowhere. Oh and I almost forgot, as if all that wasn't painful enough Beckham missed a penalty when we were on-nil up. Still at least me outplayed the best team in Europe, shame we still can't win bearing that in mind.

The biggest non-secret in football was confirmed as Chelsea held a press conference to appoint their new manager: Jose Mourinho. This guy is so confident it is breathtaking, so refreshing from all the "we'll do our best" attitudes of most managers these days.

"We have top players and, sorry if I'm arrogant, we have a top manager."

"I'm not a defender of old or new football managers. I believe in good ones and bad ones, those that achieve success and those that don't. Please don't call me arrogant, but I'm European champion and I think I'm a special one."

He reminds me of Shankly and Clough. It's a real shame Liverpool couldn't beat Chelsea to his signature, although it looks like Rafa Benitez may well be on his way to Anfield after he quit Valencia yesterday.

Chelsea have finally put poor Ranieri out of his misery by confirming that he'll be leaving the club today, the way Chelsea have behaved is atrocious and I'm surprised the LMA hasn't had quite a lot to say about the treatment of one of their members over the past season. Liverpool convincingly beat Blackburn Rovers 4-0 at Anfield; Houllier has rounded on his critics claiming that the criticism that they have heaped on his team are to blame for their poor performances. Strange I would have thought that playing people out of position and bad team selection in general would be a more direct cause of our poor form. How on Earth Igor Biscan can continue to be selected at the heart of defense over Henchoz I will never know. Time and time again Igor Biscan costs us dear in vital games, Henchoz on the other hand, despite his lack of pace, has been one of the most relaible players in our team for the last 2 or 3 years.

Sepp Blatter is again trying to interfere with English domestic football, apparently he'll 'let us' have 18 teams in the top flight if we abandon F.A. Cup replays. Maybe he hasn't noticed, but in this country domestic football is a lot more important than national football, and to be honest international fixtures in the domestic season are an unwelcome distraction from real football.

Following yet another mass substitution-a-thon in Portugal that made a mockery of the game of football Sven has 'warned' FIFA that restricting the number of substitutes that can be used in friendly games to a maximum of five would be a big mistake. Liverpool outplayed Man Utd for 75 minutes at Anfield today. Unfortunately in the 15 minutes where we had a bit of a slump Man Utd scored two goals to Liverpool's one. Once again Emile Heskey was guilty of missing easy chances to add to our goals tally. I wonder what dirt Emile has on Houllier and Eriksson that keeps him in the first team for Liverpool and England respectively?

The big day! Leaving work at midday to start the 240 mile trip up to Liverpool we made prety good time most of the way. At one point the motorway was closed to a single lane, when we got to the point where the accident had been we found that there was nothing, no accident, no mess, no closure of the motorway as signposted. What we did find, a few miles down the road, on the other side of the motorway was a huge crash with the air ambulance landed on the motorway .. the pillocks had closed the wrong side of the motorway!

We got to Liverpool just before 6, parke dup and found a pub. My bank manager decided to call me to discuss my finances at this time; I told him it wasn't teh best time to talk and maybe he should ring me another time (when I dont' have any reception preferably).

The game itself (Liverpool vs Olimpia Ljubjana) was pretty average in the first half, but enjoyable none-the-less. The second half was much better, Sinama-Pongolle looks a class player - in 20 minutes or so he did more than Le Tallec has done in his numerous substitute appearances and deserved a goal. I saw an Emile Heskey goal, and Igor Biscan running past 5 players before blazing just over the bar! I'm not sure whether it was the effect of the 5 hour car journey though :)

We got back to Winchester at 3AM, after another 6 hours driving. 11 hours driving, and a 480 mile round trip to watch 90 minutes of football - that's what being a football fan is all about :)

Liverpool lost 2-1 to Arsenal despite playing very well for most of the first half - Arsenal aren't top of the league without reason, but we really should be turning performances liek this into 3 points. Two weeks running now Houulier has bemoaned 'poor finishing'. Defensively we have major problems, Biscan seems intent to give away at least one goal per game through sloppy passes from the back line.

I bought a video capture device from Dixons today .. hopefully i'll get some multimedia type stuff for the website out of it, but basically I wanted a new gadget! Haven't had chance to play around with it yet

In a rather low key draw (I didn't even know it was happening until I caught the news on the BBC site) Liverpool have been drawn away to Blackburn Rovers in the third round of the Carling Cup -- an interesting tie given the recent fall out of Houllier and Souness over Lucas Neill's 'tackle' that left Carragher with a broken leg.

Fuck Hoddle! The biggest ego in football has been sacked by Tottenham after dragging the club to even new depths. I can't quite put my finger on exactly what it is about Glenn Hoddle that makes me hate him so much though;

  • maybe it's the way he involved faith healers in the England camp?
  • maybe it's because he said 'Michael Owen was not a natural goalscorer'?
  • maybe it's because he told James Beattie 'he had no future in football'?
  • maybe it's simply because he's a complete twat?
This man has repeatedly shown a complete lack of judgement of all things football yet still has been appointed to some of the top jobs in the country, maybe now, at last, his reputation will be such that he will not return. I expect him to turn up on ITVs 'The Premiership' any week now, he'll fit right in there.

Yet again, England did it the hard way, only after going a goal down to Mecedonia did they start playing football. Two goals in 8 minutes rescued another desperate situation, yet again victory and three points against poor opposition has gone a long way to masking the tactical failings of our national team coach.

Saw Blackball at Ster Century in Basingstoke - I really enjoyed it - although it wasn't particularly original and the plot was pretty see through at most times it was still an enjoyable hour and a half's entertainment.

On the way back from Basingstoke we saw the aftermath of a car crash - two boy racers in modified cars had hit each other on the roundabout off of junction 9. I'd like to say I gained no joy out of their sorrow, but then if I did I'd be lying :)

Glenn Roeder finally paid for his incompetance as West Ham manager, he has taken them from being an average Premier League team, to the worst Premier League team in the country, to an average First Division team, all in the course of only two and a half years. The sceptical part of me (about 99.9% of me) believes that the only reason he has kept his job this long was down to a rather timely brain tumour .. had he not fallen ill when he did, he would not have survived as West Ham manager into the new season, of that I have absolutely no doubt.

Liverpool made a right mess of their second game of the season -- a goalless draw away at Villa, with Kewell's talents again wasted out on the right wing and a noticable lack of creativity in midfield things don't look good for the coming season -- here's hoping that Le Tallec turns out to be the next Thierry Henry!

Now the desire to kill oneself and to assasinate, poison, obliterate or rape others is generally considered in the psychiatric profession as 'unhealthy'. Bad. Evil. More accurately, sin. When you have the desire to kill yourself, you are supposed to see it and 'accept it', but not, for Christ's sake, to kill yourself. If you desire to have carnal knowledge of a helpless teeny-bopper, you are supposed to accept your lust, and not lay a finger on even her big toe. If you hate your father, fine - but don't slug the bastard with a bat. Understand yourself, accept yourself, but do not be yourself.

Watched Man Utd. v Newcastle in the pub with Steve, disappointingly Newcastle threw away some real chances to take points of Man U, a common failing among Man Utd's opponents all too recently. The most entertaining event of game was Alex Ferguson's sending off midway through the first half; he made the mistake of telling the fourth official what he thought of the referee and was banished from the dugout for using "abusive language to the match officials". As much as I hate the guy it's a sign of the state we find ourselves in these days' as the passion is slowly and systematically drained from the sport.

In the most appaling show of arrogance the West Ham players decided that Rotherham's changing room wasn't good enough for them and insisted on getting changed in a nearby hotel instead! How Roeder allowed his players to get away with this I will never know, he clearly has no authority in the dressing room anymore, if he ever did! Surely the West Ham board will have to act after today's events and sack Roeder, better late then never I'm sure most West Ham fans would agree.

Catching up with the lastest football gossip one story jumped out at me: Glenn Hoddle, never the sanest manager in the land, and a complete twat to boot, really has lost it this time -- he has lodged a £5.6 million bid for Santos' midfielder Diego! This smacks of a publicity stunt by the going-nowhere London club, but just incase they are serious, maybe someone should tell them that this kid actaully has talent and would probably prefer a move to a club that will actually win trophies, and £5.6 million is a bit on the cheap side, that's my opinion anyway.

Liverpool's strikers showing a complete disregard for the art of finishing, even Owen took two attempts to put away his penalty! Have fun Mr. Roeder, eventually someone on the West Ham board will realise you just don't have what it takes to be a football manager.

He could not make them understand that he belonged to another generation, another era, another world, that having a good time bored him and was not worth the effort, and that they bored him, too. The called him 'Yo-Yo' jocularly and came in tipsy late at night and woke him up with their clumsy, bumping. giggling efforts to be quiet, then bombarded him with asinine shouts of hilarious good-fellowship when he sat up cursing to complain. He wanted to massacre them each time they did. They reminded him of Donald Duck's nephews. They were afraid of Yossarian and persecuted him incessantly with nagging generosity and with their exasperating insistence on doing small favours for him. All of a sudden he is now a great player though, which is something I don't get -- Foe was a very good player, but a great he was not.

I remember a few years back, when Foe left West Ham for Lyon, Liverpool were rumoured to be in the race to sign him -- I wasn't exactly jumping for joy at the prospect of Foe claiming a regular place in our midfield. It's sad that he has died this way, but I tire of hearing him described like he was some kind of legend. I'd like to remember him for wat he was, not for what he is now being cast as.

Decided that I really need to put some dedication into reading Catch-22 given how long it took me to get through Nausea. If I can aim for a chapter a day then I can fall short and still make half decent progress.

£25 million -- The Beckham transfer saga is finally over! Real Madrid got their man, as always. Laporta is fucked, and Man U supporters everywhere are, well from what I've experienced, not particularly bothered about it all. If Gerrard had left Liverpool for a mere £25 million I'd be very very very disappointed. So important was this occasion that ITV dedicated a News Special to it! Really! ... and in other news tonight, scientists have discovered a cure for cancer.

Major Major had been born too late and too mediocre. Some men are born mediocre, some men achieve mediocrity, and some men have mediocrity thrust upon them. With Major Major it had been all three. Even among men lacking all distinction he inevitable stood out as a man lacking more disctinction than all the rest, and people who met him were always impressed by how unimpressive he was.

Decided we'd take the house we saw on Friday ... it's not perfect, but it's close enough I think, and an unexpected bonus is that we don't have to deal with any letting agencies as we're dealing directly with the landlord (who I believe lives about 200 yards from my current house!!).

Laporta won the Barcelona presidential race, seemingly entirely based on the promise to brign Beckham to Barcelona -- has the world gone mad? [yes, of course it has] I'll be most interested in what happens to Mr. Laporta once he fails to lure Beckham to the Nou Camp (Backham having already flat out rejected the idea of playing for Barcelona). I don't think it really is the thought that counts ;)

Angland 2 - 1 Slovakia. In the absense of Beckham, Owen and Gerrard saved England -- why can't the England team play well, why does it always fall onto the shoulders of individuals to win matches for us -- because Sven is overrated that's why. I still maintain that we haven't played well in an important match, under Sven's management -- and I include 5-1 against Germany in that -- we were poor that night, thankfully Germany were dire, and Owen was hot!

History did not demand Yossarain's premature demise, justice could be satisfied without it, progress did not hinge upon it, victory did not depend on it. That men would die was a necessity; which men would die, though, was a matter of circumstance, and Yossarian was willing to be the victim of anything but circumstance. But that was war. Just about all he could find in its favour was that it paid well and liberated children from the pernicious influence of their parents.

Liverpool have agreed a fee with Fulham for Steve Finnan, BBC Sport claim he'll "officially be a Liverpool player by July". Not quite the world class player I think Liverpool need to challenge for the title, but buying distinctly average players has got us this far hasn't it?

Meanwhile ... Beckham's booked his kid into a school on the outskirts of Madrid apparently, I'd like to think he's on his way; if only to watch in amazement as Man Utd's fans turn on their hero, and no doubt fill the forums with "he wasn't that good anyway/he isn't our best player" drivel, despite insisting the opposite for the last half a decade or so.

England played Serbia-Montenegro yesterday, quite what we gained from this friendly game I don't know -- it was so important that I didn't even realise it was happening. Joe Cole scored a "wonder goal", which when I actually saw it was more a clever goal taking advantage of the fact that the 'keeper was woefully out of position, hardly the spectacular I was lead to expect by the press.

Liverpool's first pre-season signing wasn't exactly what I was looking for! Still, we've the prospect of Steve Finnan to look forward to next season the way things are going...

There was only one catch and that was Catch-22, which specified that a concern for one's own safety in the face of dangers that were real and immediate was the process of a rational mind. Orr was crazy and he could be grounded. All he had to do was ask; and as soon as he did, he would no longer be crazy and would have to fly more missions. Orr would be crazy to fly more missions and sane if he didn't, but if he was sane he had to fly them. If he flew them he was crazy and didn't have to; but if he didn't want to he was sane and had to. Yossarian was moved deeply by the absolute simplicity of this clause of Catch-22 and let out a respectful whistle.

Liverpool didn't play all that impressive, but I suppose if it had been Manchester United everyone would have been praising us saying how we "did what was necessary". To make victory even sweeter the scum lost 2-1 to Deportivo this week, conceding two goals in the last five minutes: what goes around comes around?

I'm reading Less Than Zero today, according to the back page blurb: "... Less Than Zero, is a raw and powerful portrayal of a young generation that has experienced sex, drugs and disaffection at too early an age. ... Less Than Zero is the shocking coming-of-age novel about the casual nihilism that comes with youth and money".

House to myself all weekend (as usual), started to pack all my gear up for next Saturday when it's all heading back to Maidstone. I shall not be looking forward to an entire week with no TV, PC, PS2 or stereo. Argh, I might actually have to have a life for a week!

In the world of football, it looks like Liverpool have finally got rid of Houllier's biggest mistake; Christian Ziege - on his way to Spuds, by all accounts.

Liverpool sealed their place in the Champion's League yesterday by hammering Charlton to grab third place, so I can finally celebrate this season now. The cup treble is beginning to sink in too - three trophies in one season, that's as many as we've won in the ten year's I've been supporting Liverpool!!

Final tomorrow - I've got a really good feeling about this one, it's gonna be our year; the cup treble and Champions league qualification, just 180 minutes of football away.

Oh, I won the auction for the Man-At-Arms figure, could this be a sign??

Watched "When Liverpool Ruled The World" on the BBC, a documentary on the Liverpool teams of the 60's 70's and early 80's, just seeing all those great teams brings a smile to my face, especially seeing as Man Utd were so shit in those days. Could tomorrow be the beginning of a new chapter in the Liverpool dynasty, Man U aren't looking the same recently; I think it's about time the true champions took their rightful place once again.

Football isn't a way of life, it is life.

What a day, lovely sunny day, woke up about 10, nipped into town to buy a few CD's and got back in time for the main event, the F.A. Cup final.

Oh boy what a great match, one-nil down with 15 minutes to go, I was in a very bad mood, then magic, o what magic; Owen puts us back in it, needless to say I was now a happier person, 8 minutes of great football later; and Owen burns past Dixon to score the winner. At which point I hit the roof, total psycho madness; I was very happy now. Me & Ant are going to head down to Southampton to frequent a few pubs in celebration this evening.

IT's v Grad's footy today - we won 3-1, I fucked my knee (again), some French guy on the graduate team got sent off for 'butting one of our players, also had two penalties; it was an eventful match to say the least. Also put a fiver on 'Boro to get relegated at william hill. Couldn't resist the odds of 50-1.
